15 Hospitals in the Philadelphia Region and 2 Hospitals in Delaware Earn an “A” in the Fall 2024 Hospital Safety Grades from The Leapfrog Group
Leapfrog Reports Improvements Nationally in Healthcare-Associated Infections, Hand Hygiene and Medication Safety
Philadelphia, PA, November 15, 2024 – The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit, representing hundreds of the nation’s most influential employers and purchasers of health care, announced the fall 2024 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades. Driven in southeastern Pennsylvania and Delaware by the Greater Philadelphia Business Coalition on Health (GPBCH), these grades provide a critical measure of patient safety for hospitals nationwide. 15 hospitals in the Philadelphia Region and 2 hospitals in Delaware earned an “A,” and Pennsylvania ranked ninth in the country overall for percentage of “A” hospitals.

With over 3,000 hospitals participating in the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, representing almost 80% of hospital beds in the U.S., the latest grades show hospitals nationwide are making strides in patient safety across several performance measures including improvements in healthcare-associated infections, hand hygiene and medication safety.

For the fall 2024 Safety Grades in southeastern Pennsylvania, 35 hospitals were graded, and 15 earned an “A”, 4 earned a “B”, 14 earned a “C”, and 2 earned a “D”. In Delaware, 7 hospitals were graded, 2 earned an “A”, 1 earned a “B”, and 4 earned a “C”.

“The progress we’ve witnessed at the hospitals in the Greater Philadelphia Region is encouraging and worthy of applause. However, there is still much work to be done to continue making gains in patient safety,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “We commend the hospitals in southeastern Pennsylvania and Delaware that are clearly focusing on prioritizing patients and their safety—an effort that takes absolute dedication from hospital staff at all levels.”

"Knowing that the Safety Grade is associated with patient outcomes and costs of care, we encourage health plans to use this information in contracting with and providing incentives to the region's hospitals, and we encourage employers, whether or not they are members of our Coalition, to use the information to educate the workforce and to drive volume toward safer facilities,” said Neil Goldfarb, GPBCH President and CEO. “We are particularly concerned about the persistent D ratings for the Crozer system hospitals. Until their issues are resolved, we strongly encourage employers and employees to seek care elsewhere."

The Leapfrog Group has a more than 10-year history of assigning letter grades to general hospitals throughout the U.S., based on a hospital’s ability to prevent medical errors and harm to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Hospital Safety Grade results are based on more than 30 national performance measures and are updated each fall and spring.
